National Express is two quite different operations sharing a name. The best known is the national coach network linking hundreds of towns, cities and airports across Great Britain. The other is National Express West Midlands, one of the largest urban bus operations in the country, running the majority of local services in and around Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

Coaches versus buses

Coach services are reservation-based with allocated seats and fixed departure times from coach stations and designated stops — you cannot simply flag one down. The West Midlands buses are ordinary turn-up-and-go local services.

Tickets

Coach tickets are cheapest booked in advance online, and prices rise as departure approaches. West Midlands bus travel uses local tickets, contactless capping and Network West Midlands multi-operator products.
